Write that is :-)

I struggle to find the time in my life to sit down and put pen to paper or infact bash the keyboard. I most often write during my lunch hour at work. I find it is an escape from the pressures of my job.

I'd like to write more at home but at the moment I have an ancient PC that takes a decade or two to boot up so........I don't bother.

When and where do you do it?
Are you disciplined or lazy like me?

I love that Dorothy Parker Quote:

"The art of writing is the art of applying the ass to the seat"

I know what you mean, sometimes it is hard to do that.

I've failed in being disciplined....many times....

I used to do these marathon sessions on Sundays with the warning to family to not disturb me under any circumstances. Being in a typical Mexican family, my time is considered communal property and writing an indulgent and selfish hobby. Unfortunately I put too much pressure on myself after awhile and I wound up not writing anything.

At this time, I try to wait until everyone in my house is asleep (typically after 10 pm) so that no one may demand anything of me. But it is not as often as I would like.

Also, I seem to get snatches of inspiration when working so I keep a notebook with me all the time. I write down the little bits and expand on them later.

I need to arrange a regular writing time.

I write when or wherever I can. Most of the time it's unexpected so i always have a pen and pad with me...always.

i need the low key distractions of a community area
filled with people i do not know bustling around
and doing interesting things around me every so often

usually it is a coffee shop, but not a starbucks
the individual atmosphere and decor needs to be there
as well as people performing intellectual tasks like
reading a paper, doing a crossword, discussing world affairs
(that last one has to be at a distance or i will get involved)

      i cannot write at home

I carry a journal everywhere with me, and have jotted notes down in food courts, waiting rooms, hospitals, bus stops, etc. I use my computer at home when working on an actual draft -- but the "raw data" in my journals often contributes to the more finished writing.

I don't keep to a set schedule; it depends on the project. Sometimes a call for submissions will spur me on.

A friend of mine has been drafting her novel in a spiral-bound notebook and then typing up the sections on her computer at home, in between work and raising two children.

My favorite story is one told by Glenda Larke at last year's Worldcon, as part of the panel, "Writing in Spite of Your Environment." Glenda described what it was like to write on her laptop in the middle of Borneo, while rain thundered on a tarp overhead and she had to stop every now and then to brush leeches off her legs. (The motto of that panel was: No Excuses!) Glenda posted pictures here:
